What to expect at your first bachata social

A social is an evening of bachata where you dance with different people, at your own pace. Here is how a Bachata Saturdays social works, so nothing about it is a surprise.

What does a social look like?

Our socials are usually held once a month, from around 9:00 PM to 12:45 AM. Most nights we go straight into social dancing. On some dates we also run a one-hour workshop before the social, usually from 8:30 to 9:30 PM. These are generally beginner-friendly and could be partnerwork, ladies styling, follower styling or another focused bachata topic. The exact format is announced for each social.

You do not have to arrive at 9:00 PM or stay until the end. Come, dance for as long as you enjoy it, and leave when you are ready.

What music do you play?

100% bachata. You can expect a mix of Dominican, modern, sensual and fusion styles, so the energy and musical texture change through the night while staying completely bachata-focused.

How do people ask each other to dance?

Keep it simple: "Would you like to dance?" Anyone can ask anyone. Followers can ask leaders too. There is no rule about who needs to make the first move.

Our socials are intentionally quite independent. We do not formally introduce newcomers, assign partners or organise dances for people. If you are new to social dancing, please read our Code of Conduct before attending. It covers asking for dances, saying no, personal boundaries, hygiene, filming and general social-floor etiquette.

Do I have to dance all night?

Not at all. You can dance every song, take breaks, sit and watch, chat, or leave early. There is no minimum amount you are expected to dance.

Especially when you are starting out, a handful of good social dances can be more useful than trying to dance continuously for three hours. Go at your own pace.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No. A social is not organised around fixed couples. People ask different dancers throughout the evening, and coming alone is completely normal.

There is also no formal partner rotation during the social. Rotation is something we use in our classes to help students learn to adapt to different partners. At a social, you simply choose who you would like to ask, dance together for a song, say thank you, and move on when you are ready.

Where is it, and what does it cost?

Our socials are usually hosted at Don’t Tell Mama, HSR Layout, although the venue can occasionally change. Typical pricing is ₹500 with pre-registration or ₹600 at the door, which usually includes a ₹300 F&B cover that can be redeemed against food and beverages at the venue.

Pricing, venue and inclusions can change from one edition to another, so always check the announcement for that month’s social. See what’s on.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothes, appropriate dance footwear and anything you need to stay fresh through the evening. A spare T-shirt, deodorant and a small towel can be especially useful for a close-contact dance like bachata. If you have not danced at a social before, how long it takes to learn bachata explains what to expect from yourself.

What is ladies styling?
