Improver bachata: what you’ll learn in 6 weeks
Who our Improver level is for, what we are working towards by the end of the six weeks, and how to tell when you are ready for Intermediate.

Who Improver is for
Students who have already learned the basics and are ready to build on them. We generally recommend around three months of Bachata experience before entering Improver, and you should already be reasonably comfortable with:
- Bachata basic timing;
- weight transfer;
- basic frame and connection;
- fundamental turns;
- and simple lead/follow concepts.
If you are not there yet, Beginner: what you’ll learn is the place to start.
After a 6-week Improver cycle, our goal is that you can:
Everyone learns at a different pace, so we do not treat six weeks as a guarantee that every student will perform every skill identically. A better way to think about each cycle is: by the end of these six weeks, this is what we are working towards.
- 1. Connect movements more smoothly.
- Transition between turns, positions and partnerwork without constantly stopping or resetting.
- 2. Maintain timing through more complex movements.
- Directional changes and combinations shouldn’t automatically make you lose the music.
- 3. Use connection more intentionally.
- Begin understanding how changes in frame, direction and energy communicate movement instead of relying on physical force or anticipation.
- 4. Develop more controlled body movement.
- Start integrating isolations, hip movement and other movement concepts while keeping your basic structure intact.
- 5. Add styling and footwork without losing the dance.
- Explore individual expression while continuing to respect timing and partner connection.
- 6. Become more adaptable socially.
- Start using concepts rather than simply recreating a sequence exactly as it appeared in class.
When are you ready for Intermediate?
Intermediate requires more than remembering Improver combinations. Your:
- timing;
- balance;
- fundamental turns;
- transitions;
- body movement;
- frame;
- and lead/follow connection
should be fairly consistent across different partners. For our Intermediate level, we generally look for around 12 months of overall Bachata experience. See how long each level usually takes. Ready for the next step? Intermediate: what you’ll learn.
